April 18 - Jon Beall
Jon Beall addressed the club,  providing a presentation on the Citizen’s Climate Lobby.  Citizen’s Climate Lobby (CCL) is a grassroots organization seeking support to stop climate change.  They are laser-focused on a specific piece of legislation – the passage of Carbon Fee and Dividend.  This is a solution that economists and scientists say is the ‘best first-step’ to preventing the worst impacts of a warming world.  The presentation included facts concerning global warming.  CCL has chapters world-wide, with several in the Austin area.  We enjoyed the opportunity to hear what they are working on, and how they hope to affect change.  They also let us know how we can get involved!

April 11 - Jenny Mashburn
The club met at the Lake Travis Middle School for Jenny Mashburn’s presentation concerning the annual event at the South Austin Marketplace.  We participated with our DAP grant to help fund the event, providing bags with toiletry items, as well as socks, food, and coffee to men at South Austin Marketplace, as well as homeless men near that facility.  The truck was loaded with enough provisions for 100 men!  The students attending with Jenny are there to help serve, and offer community to the men.  Jenny gives so tirelessly of herself, and inspires the students to do the same!

March 21- Philippe Bochaton
Philippe Bochaton, CEO/President Baylor Scott & White, Lakeway. Philippe was pleased to have the opportunity to speak to the club about the positive changes happening with the Lakeway location! He spoke about the commitment to customer service, quality of service, as well as being a community partner.   He showed plans of adding retail space, and building out the rest of the site.  Philippe also mentioned that there is room for growth with the number of beds being offered, as that need grows locally.  It was a great opportunity to hear firsthand the great changes taking place with Baylor Scott & White locally!

Feb 21 - Marie Lowman
Marie Lowman, Bee Cave City Council member, spoke to the club about growth and development in the area.  She was able to speak about current projects and progress, as well as planned developments being presented to the Council for approval.  She has also filled the position of Commissioner for the Bee Cave Planning and Zoning, so brings a depth of knowledge of her subject.  She spent time answering questions from the club, making this a very interactive morning!

Feb 7th - Barbara Hathaway
Barbara Hathaway, Director of the Bee Cave Public Library, spoke to the club on Feb. 7th.  She shared how the library has changed over the years, it is no longer simply a place to ‘borrow’ a book! You can still, of course, take a book home, but you can also access the digital library on your hand held device!  They can share access via TexShare with libraries across the state, gaining access to databases touching on a host of subjects!  They, of course, have computers available to use, and can help with research needs you may have.  The library is such a community partner…they have a monthly book club, knitting club, summer reading program for all ages, they work with high school students with volunteer hours, the list is long! If you haven’t visited in awhile, you owe it to yourself to spend some time with them.  The incredible staff is there for assistance, and will welcome you in.

Inaugural Clothing Drive

Thank You Bee Cave -Spicewood!

Bee Cave - Spicewood Rotary Club's inaugural community clothing drive was a huge success! Children's clothes were donated to Legacy Austin Children's Home. BCSR's friend, Jenny Mashburn delivered some of the men's clothing to the South Austin Marketplace, a half-way house for men coming back from life on the street. She took the rest of the clothes on Mobile Loaves and Fishes trucks that serve Austin's homeless.

LTMS Prep and Event

LTMS Community Service Project

Lake Travis Middle School students partnered with Mobile Loaves and Fishes for an event for the men of South Austin Marketplace. The students prepped for the event by making sandwiches, adding treats to the basic essentials in the gift bags, and writing messages of encouragement in cards. At the event they worked the MLF trucks to distribute food, coffee, gifts, clothing, and cards. Later, the students socialized and shared some fellowship with the men attending the event.

LTMS Project 2014

In December, the Bee Cave Rotary funded a community service project run by students at the Lake Travis Middle School. Jenny Mashburn, a math teacher at Lake Travis Middle School, leads an FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) club at LTMS. She organized a Mobile Loaves and Fishes truck run on December 19th  with her FCA kids and other LTMS students to serve a meal and hand out gift bags at South Austin Market Place.

South Austin Market Place is a home for men who are coming up off the streets and/or coming out of some difficult times.   Jenny's served there before through Mobile Loaves and Fishes and  recently took students from LTMS there to serve with her again.  Jenny says, "I am partial to these men because they are so incredibly nice and very grateful for the things that people do for them."

On December 19, Jenny and the LTMS students served sandwiches they had prepared and handed out gift bags filled with socks, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste and toothbrushes provided by BCS Rotary.  Here are some pictures of the event:
